Some good answers so far.Yellow Page ads are exinpseve as well as there are so many different directories. Are you on Angie's List? This is a referral service that has done well and worth looking at. Also I would give out refrigerator magnets to all my customers and put a sign on the lawn whenever you are working so people know who you are and why they should hire you. Have you developed a referral program such as if you refer a friend I will give you $ 10 off my next visit.Does your truck have advertising on it that's important.Have you put your cards on bulletin boards around town? Have you solicited business from other small businesses to see if they have a plumber they trust? Can you develop a program such as clog prevention I will snake your drains 2 times a year to prevent clogs for a special price. Can you position yourself as an expert and write a column in the local paper eg why liquid plumber hurts more than helps or some other topics.

Well coincidentally I was loonikg for a plumber for a while (Vancouver Canada) and they are HARD to find (our construction industry has been busy getting ready for the 2010 Olympics coming to Vancouver). My husband went down to the local plumber supply store and just hung around waiting for some real plumbers (not do-it-yourselfers) to come by. He found one. So how about asking your local plumbing store, home depot, etc. if they have bulletin boards and post a flyer?Other ideas: post in Craigslist in your town/city; join your local chamber of commerce you will find local businesses like to support members; join a construction industry association network with businesses and the industry make contacts. You might try advertising on radio very local; make sure your truck/car has your company name/phone number look for someone to do a car ad-wrap; have business cards lots they're cheap to print (nothing fancy you'll look too expensive).Good luck.

Word of mouth is the best source of atrnvdisieg! Other than word of mouth I would invest in the phone book. Good luck with the business, contractors have it pretty rough with the crappy economy and the dwindling new house market. As if there where not enough challenges with all the competition around too.Oh yeah, when I did HVAC, I used to leave refrigerator magnets so if something goes wrong you get the call and if any one asks, they can say oh I have a number right here !! Magnets worked fantastic for service work and for new job prospects. I have even given one to a contractor for his tool box when I submitted a bid!!! That bid became the start of a long and rewarding relationship.
