Fire and smoke damage in Greensboro
The Piedmont's hazards are not only the ones that start in the kitchen, though cooking is the leading cause of home fires nationally, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Greensboro also knows what it is like when the power is out for days. The ice storm of December 2002 left half an inch or more of ice across the Triad, toppled trees onto roofs and lines, and left some customers without electricity for up to ten days. Insured property damage statewide was estimated at $113 million.
Damaged houses can also be left open and unheated, and smoke residue keeps working on surfaces. Sooty materials that sit for days can corrode metal and set odors in fabric.
What a fire and smoke job involves
Crews secure the building, then sort belongings into what can be cleaned, what needs specialist cleaning and what must be discarded. Soot is removed from walls and ceilings before sealing, and odor treatment is tailored to the smoke type. Protein residue from a kitchen fire behaves differently from a wood or electrical fire.
Ask what will be photographed and inventoried, and whether odor treatment includes ducts and insulation. Two guides help: why smoke smell comes back and what can be saved after a house fire.
