Painting in Toronto

Paint in a Toronto house can be older than the owner thinks. Health Canada warns that homes built before 1960 will have lead in the paint, indoors and out, and that it was often heaviest on trim, windows, doors, banisters and porches. The agency advises against sanding or heat-gunning old painted surfaces, because sanding creates lead-contaminated dust and heat creates lead vapour. That matters in the many Toronto neighbourhoods of pre-war brick and frame houses, where a routine repaint can become a dust problem for children and pets. Condos and newer builds have different issues, such as fresh drywall, builder-grade primer and shared-ceiling repairs.

What a painting job involves

Most of the quality is in the preparation. The work usually covers protecting floors and furniture, cleaning, patching and sanding drywall, caulking, priming stains and bare surfaces, then two finish coats. Exterior work adds scraping, repair of rot and a dry-weather window. Ask whether the painter follows lead-safe practices on pre-1960 homes, which primer is used over water or smoke stains (see why smoke odor comes back), how many coats are included, and what warranty covers peeling. Get the scope, paint brand and sheen in writing.
