Fire and smoke damage in Honolulu

Honolulu's fire risk is shaped by its towers. In July 2017 a fire at the 36-story Marco Polo condominium on Kapiolani Boulevard killed four people and caused more than $100 million in damage. The city responded with ordinances aimed at older residential high-rises, requiring life-safety evaluations and sprinkler retrofits; buildings with unacceptable scores have until May 3, 2030 to complete upgrades, or until May 3, 2038 if they commit to full sprinklers.

In a high-rise, smoke travels through corridors, shafts and shared ventilation, so units far from the fire can carry soot and odor. Sprinkler and hose water then flows down through floors, which means one fire often becomes a water loss for several households. Honolulu's humidity, which can pass 80 percent in August, also matters afterward: wet materials and soot residue left in warm, moist air give corrosion and mold a head start.

What a fire and smoke job involves

Crews secure the building, remove debris, extract water, and clean or remove soot-coated surfaces, then treat odor at the source rather than masking it. Electronics, textiles and metals are assessed for what can be cleaned. See our guide to smoke damage you can't see and what can be saved after a house fire.
