Roofing in Sandy and along the Wasatch Front

A roof in Sandy works against a full set of weather: heavy mountain snow loads in winter, repeated freeze and thaw that opens small gaps, strong summer sun at altitude, and the occasional hailstorm. Asphalt shingles are the common covering, and their life depends on how well the attic is ventilated as much as on the age of the shingles. Ice dams, where melting snow refreezes at the eave and backs water under the shingles, are a frequent way a sound-looking roof leaks into a ceiling.

Wind is the other local factor. Canyon winds along the foothills can lift shingles that were fastened loosely, and a torn roof is usually first noticed as a stain on a ceiling after the next storm.

What a roof replacement involves

A replacement strips the old covering, inspects and repairs the decking beneath it, lays underlayment and flashing, and installs new shingles and ventilation. Ask whether the price includes decking repairs, how old layers are disposed of, and who is responsible if the weather turns mid-job. After hail or wind, tarps, board-up and storm chasers explains what to do first and whom to be careful of.
