Air duct cleaning in Scottsdale

Dust is the local issue. Haboobs, the walls of dust that thunderstorm outflow lifts off the desert during monsoon season, are mostly coarse particulate (PM10), and Phoenix's worst have registered readings far above the federal 24-hour standard of 150 micrograms per cubic meter. Dust from those storms is a fact of life in the Scottsdale area, which is why duct cleaning is such a common question.

The EPA's advice is more restrained than most sales pitches. It does not recommend routine duct cleaning, only cleaning as needed: when there is substantial visible mold, a rodent or insect infestation, or ducts so clogged that debris blows into the rooms. It also says there is no evidence that a light layer of household dust in ducts poses a health risk. The honest reason to clean is a visible problem, not the calendar.

What an air duct cleaning job involves

A cleaning crew inspects the system, contains the work area, agitates debris loose and pulls it out with a vacuum that exhausts through HEPA filtration. The industry standard from the National Air Duct Cleaners Association calls for inspection before and after, with a post-cleaning check that the system is actually clean.

Ask to see photographs or video of the inside of the ducts before and after, which parts are included (supply, returns, coil, blower), and what evidence supports any health claim. If mold turns up, the moisture source has to be fixed first; our guide to mold after water damage explains testing and remediation.
