Water, storm and plumbing losses in Phoenix

Phoenix can get a year of trouble in a single day. On September 8, 2014, Sky Harbor recorded 3.30 inches of rain, the most on any calendar day since records began in 1895, and the flooding closed interstates and swamped underpasses. Water with nowhere to drain goes where it can, which for a house means door thresholds, garage floors and low spots in a yard.

Most of the year the cause is indoors instead: a failed supply line, a water heater, a slab leak. That split decides who to call first. A plumber stops and repairs the source; a restoration crew removes the water and dries the structure. Many losses need both, and our guide on a burst pipe or flood: plumber or restoration company first sorts out the order.

What a plumbing and water job involves

Plumbing is a licensed trade in Arizona. The Registrar of Contractors issues plumbing classifications for residential and commercial work, so ask any plumber for a license number and look it up before work starts. Expect the plumber to find the failure, shut it off, repair or replace the damaged section and pressure-test the line.

The water that escaped is a separate job. Crews extract standing water, open walls or floors where moisture is trapped, and dry the structure with readings to show when it is done. Ask who will do each part, what the written scope covers, and which contractor license applies to any rebuilding. The first day matters, so read the first 24 hours after water damage before anyone arrives.
