Storm damage in Midlothian

Midlothian, in Chesterfield County, has a record of wind events that arrive with little notice. On September 17, 2018, a tornado spawned by the remnants of Hurricane Florence crossed the area, was rated EF2 by the National Weather Service, and stayed on the ground for about 7.5 miles. The June 2012 derecho brought hurricane-force wind to the Richmond region, downed many trees and left hundreds of thousands without power, some for up to a week. Hurricane Isabel in 2003 did much the same across central Virginia. The common damage is a tree across a roof, torn shingles and soaked insulation, then water in ceilings once rain follows.

What a storm damage job involves

The first hours are about keeping the weather out: a temporary tarp or board-up over the opening, and removal of the fallen tree by a separate tree service where needed. Next comes water extraction and drying of any rooms the rain reached, then permanent roof, siding and interior repair. Take photos before anything is moved, and keep receipts for emergency work. Ask whether the company will work with your adjuster, what the temporary repair covers, and get permanent repair scopes in writing. Our guides on tarps, board-up and storm chasers and the adjuster's visit explain the decisions.
